Brand New - “Moshi Moshi” (live at Messiah College; 04/30/11)
I was there! I’m not sure I could put into words how shocked and elated I was to experience this back in April; I didn’t think I’d ever hear the song live again, and then this happened. Well, I just found out that someone recorded the whole set so now I can relive it in mp3 format (there was already a video of the song), as well as the phenomenal “Soco” (“I’m old and jealous cos you’re young and in love”) that preceded it.
BRAND NEW - “MOSHI MOSHI”
This happened Saturday night. The show (and set) was very, very, very good, and to get this rare surprise closer was just unbelievable. I love you, Brand New.
My girlfriend and I are hitting the road soon for the best weekend ever.
Third Eye Blind was my first favorite band. When 2001 came around, I heard Your Favorite Weapon and Brand New was my new favorite band and they have been ever since. I doubt the two will ever tour together, so getting to see them on back to back days is about as good as it will ever get.
Today: Allston, MA to New Jersey for the night.
Tomorrow: NJ to Hershey, PA for a trip to Chocolate World; Hershey to Grantham, PA for BRAND NEW at Messiah College with Jordan and Maria, who I have not seen in 366 days.
Sunday: PA to Providence, RI for THIRD EYE BLIND at Lupo’s. Then I guess it’s home to Allston.

Brand New is really good at only making one setlist per tour and playing it every night, so if this is what I see Saturday I’ll be a very, very happy boy. The lack of “You Stole” is excellent, and I haven’t heard “Millstone” or “Spin Light” or “Soco” live in awhile and that song at the end is just alshrakhjkahkah YES. Awhile ago, I wrote this big long piece about how much that song - especially live, especially with the changed lyrics at the end - means to me, but I never posted it because it was far too personal. I’d love to be able to hear it live like that again now.
The last time I saw Brand New was April 29, 2010 at Hampton Beach Ballroom Casino.
The next time I’ll see Brand New is April 30, 2011 at Brubaker Auditorium in Grantham, Pennsylvania.
My girlfriend bought us tickets today.
It will be my 33rd Brand New show.
Anyone else going (to any of their April shows)?

NOSTALGIA WEEK: DAY ONE
Brand New - “Jude Law and a Semester Abroad”
Your Favorite Weapon
This week is a BIG week for musical nostalgia. (Friday’s post will shed more light on why…or if you know who is playing in Boston on Friday, you’ll know why.) I’ve decided to post a song every day from now until Friday and take a look back at six albums that defined my life and shaped my musical tastes.

My love for Brand New is no secret, so I’d feel wrong starting this off with any other band. Back in the day of AOL, I saw the line “the only broken hearted loser you’ll ever need” in someone’s profile. Being a broken hearted loser myself (some things never change) I really liked it, so I tried to find out what it was from. I failed. (Remember when you couldn’t find everything on the internet like you can today?) Shortly after that in the fall of 2001, one of my friends asked me if I’d heard of Brand New. “Brand new what?” I asked. (Remember when everyone used to ask that?) We were in study hall, so she handed me his headphones and I heard “Jude Law.” I was hooked. I needed more instantly. I asked to borrow the CD (remember those?) but she said it had just come out so she didn’t want to let me borrow it, but she’d burn me a copy. The next day I had it in my possession. I listened over and over, and fell in love. When I heard the “broken hearted loser” line I was really excited that the line I had forgotten about had reappeared to me on this incredible new album. The next day, I went out and bought it for myself. (Remember buying CD’s in stores?)
Three excellent albums and nine years (that’s more than one third of my life!) later, they are unquestionably the best. I’ve enjoyed the music, (most of) the shows, the people I’ve met through them, the crazy drama they create (one dollar bandits! they hate their fans! mics are for singing! etc etc) and everything else that comes along with it.
Long live Brand New.

Brand New - “The Shower Scene”
This video contains super old footage, a sweet triple guitar flip at 1:53 and begins with 12 seconds of “Jude Law” for no apparent reason.
Awesome.
